About the Book
For more than four centuries, the Cape Fear and North Carolina coast has seen everything from Indian wars to pirates, British redcoats and patriot militiamen. Its shores have been home to stately plantations and signers of the Declaration of Independence. We've hosted lady spies and mighty forts. Gray-clad rebels faced down blue jacketed Union foes, and everyone faced down the specter of death from diseases like Yellow Fever. In this collection of stories from Coastal Chronicles magazine, Jack E. Fryar, Jr. presents twenty-seven true, factually accurate tales of the historic North Carolina coast. Written as a fiction writer or storyteller would, these stories put a human face on the dramatic and sometimes humorous history of the Tar Heel State, and span more than four centuries of events. "There is great history in these books." says North Carolina Governor Michael Easley; and the collection has been called "...fascinating...an outstanding offering..." by Our State magazine.

About the Author
Jack is a lifelong Wilmingtonian, with a background as a sports and radio announcer. In 2000, he founded Dram Tree Books, which publishes titles on the history and lore of the Lower Cape Fear. A prolific author himself, Jack has written "The Coastal Chronicles," (2 vols.) and is currently writing a series of illustrated history books for young people, including "Under Three Flags" (the story of Fort Johnston), "The Yellow Death" (about the 1862 yellow fever epidemic that nearly wiped out Wilmington) and "King George and Broadswords!" about the battle of Moores Creek Bridge.

About the Book
As the American Revolution batters the Carolinas, pregnant seventeen-year-old Betsy Sheridan, daughter of Sophie Barton (Paper Woman), leaves her home in Georgia to track down her Patriot spy husband and becomes entangled in the chaos leading up to the bloody Battle of Camden in South Carolina.

About the Author
Suzanne Adair is the nom de plume for Suzanne Williams, a native Floridian who currently lives with her family in North Carolina. In second grade, she wrote her first fiction for fun after the eye of a hurricane passed over her home, and she grew up intrigued by wild weather, stories of suspense and high adventure, Spanish St. Augustine, and the South's role in the Revolutionary War. She has traveled extensively and lived in England for half a year. After visiting the ruins of colonial-era Ft. Frederica on St. Simon's Island, Georgia, she began writing Paper Woman, the first book of her series and the recipient of the 2007 Patrick D. Smith Literature Award from the Florida Historical Society. She enjoys participating in living history to commemorate events from the Southern Theater of the Revolutionary War -- a hobby that helps her depict colonial life in writing.

About the Book
Preston Clearwater has been a criminal since stealing two chain saws and 1600 pairs of aviator sunglasses from the Army during the Second World War. Back on the road in post-war North Carolina, a member of a car-theft ring, he picks up hitch-hiking Henry Dampier, an innocent nineteen-year-old Bible salesman. Clearwater immediately recognizes Henry as just the associate he needs--one who will believe Clearwater is working as an F.B.I. spy; one who will drive the cars Clearwater steals as Clearwater follows along in another car at a safe distance. Henry joyfully sees a chance to lead a dual life as Bible salesman and a G-man.
During his hilarious and scary adventures we learn of Henry's fundamentalist youth, an upbringing that doesn't prepare him for his new life. As he falls in love and questions his religious training, Henry begins to see he's being used--that the fun and games are over, that he is on his own in a way he never imagined.
